COLLABORATION: Students forge ahead with Youth Venture projects | Changemaking | Scoop.it

"The United Way Youth Venture of North Central Massachusetts, a three-way partnership between the United Way, MWCC, and Ashoka's Youth Venture, encourages young people to initiate positive, lasting social change in their communities. Of all of the Youth Venture partnerships nationally, UWYV of North Central Massachusetts has the largest contingent of engaged students and teams."

The Ashoka Community's insight:

Changemaking must happen collaboratively, both by forming teams of teams inside of organizations and between different organizations. Read more about how Ashoka's Youth Venture, The United Way of North Central Massachusetts, and the Mount Wachusett Community College's Center for Community Learning and Civic Engagement are working together to create a generation of changemakers in the northeast.

Adam Grant: The Giving Revolution | Changemaking | Scoop.it

For givers, success is not defined by what they have accomplished individually; it’s about what they’ve accomplished that benefited others and how they likely “enlarged the pie” so all can succeed.

The Ashoka Community's insight:

Giving is one of the best ways to become a better team player. Giving without expecting anything in return is one way to succeed not just in the corporate world, but also in our everyday dealings with other people.

So many times we get together to solve a problem and nothing is accomplished—it’s frustrating. Innovative, business changing ideas can be fleeting at times, but that’s the gist of what design thinking helps address.
The Ashoka Community's insight:

More and more businesses and organizations are using design thinking to solve their biggest problems, and so can you. By empathizing with your audience, you too can solve problems more efficiently and more effectively.

What's the difference between empathy and sympathy? (VIDEO)

What is the best way to ease someone's pain and suffering? In this beautifully animated RSA Short, Dr Brené Brown reminds us that we can only create a genuine empathic connection if we are brave enough to really get in touch with our own fragilities.

The Ashoka Community's insight:

Many of us often confuse empathy with sympathy. By understanding empathy, we are not only empowered with the skills to understand others, but are also able to use this newfound perspective to create change.

Lance Katigbak's curator insight, June 5, 1:29 PM

Many of us often confuse empathy with sympathy. As Ashoka clarifies this and drives the worldwide movement to teach children how to put themselves in the shoes of others, we not only empower them with the skills to understand others, but also inspire them to use this newfound perspective to create change. As more and more children learn to empathize, we become increasingly excited for the day that they start sitting on the driver's seats of our world.

PERSPECTIVE: British Education Experts: 'Empathy Must Be Integrated Into School Curriculum' | Changemaking | Scoop.it

"A recent report urges the British government to introduce radical changes into the English education system. The independent advisory board emphasized the need for 'team-working, emotional maturity, empathy, and other interpersonal skills,' which are 'as important as the proficiency in English and Mathematics in ensuring young people’s employment prospects."

The Ashoka Community's insight:

Evidence shows that being successful in a workplace is no longer about having a specific skill or knowledge set. Rather,  how well a person commands change is now the critical factor.

Asit Ghosh's curator insight, February 13, 8:39 AM

The schools should become development centres. Not only marks or academic talent, but also all kinds of talents should be encouraged and flourished. Good schools are not those which admit academic brilliants but can turn the weak into  strong. There is none who doesn't have talent; the development centre should create innovative curriculum which brings leash the dormant potential of the learner. The learning system sneers to be more exposure based rather than education based - first-hand not second-hand learning. unless the human mind is awakened to feel the spiritual one-ness, the conflict between communities,  countries and people cannot be resolved.

Jim Manske's curator insight, February 13, 3:12 PM

"At age three, 98% of children are creative geniuses. But by the time they’re eight or nine, young students are rule-bound, self-conscious, and view tough tasks as threats to be avoided, rather than challenges to be mastered (or as opportunities to learn new skills). By age 25, just 2% of people still possess their powerful childhood ingenuity."

The Ashoka Community's insight:

Kiran Bir Sethi watched her 5-year old son change as he was told "no" and that he "couldn't" while in standard school. Recognizing his creativity and changemaking aptitude being squashed, she knew she had to act fast. This social entrepreneur founded an experiential learning and design-thinking based teaching methodology which is creating changemakers in 35 countries.

The Ashoka Community's curator insight, June 13, 4:55 PM

Realizing that traditional schools were inculcating a "can't do" attitude in children, Kiran Bir Sethi created her own school, which incorporates creativity and design-thinking into the curriculum. Her schooling model nurtures the changemaking creativity inherent in children and gives them the permission and confidence to make real changes in their society. Today, Riverside's methodology has reached 250,000 students in 35 countries.
